Data centers are becoming an increasingly important part of the economic and infrastructure conversation across Texas. For rural communities, these developments can create opportunities for jobs, workforce development, infrastructure investment, and economic growth while also raising important questions about long-term community impacts.
To help community leaders better understand these opportunities and considerations, Texas Midwest Community Network (TMCN) and Collegiate Edu-Nation’s EPIC Initiative launched an eight-part Rural Data Center Readiness Webinar Series in August.
Starting With Data Center 101
The series kicked off August 19 with Data Center 101, an introductory session covering the fundamentals of data center development, including:
Different types of data centers
Development timelines
Workforce and career opportunities
Community impacts and considerations
The session included representatives from EduREACH, Texas Midwest Community Network, Google, Tech Labs, IREN, and Cholla Energy, offering perspectives from across the data center ecosystem.
Preparing for the Opportunity
For communities already discussing data center development, understanding the industry can help leaders ask informed questions and evaluate potential opportunities. For communities that have not yet entered those conversations, learning about the industry now can help them prepare for what may come next.
Data center development can influence workforce needs, infrastructure planning, local businesses, education, and long-term economic development. Having this information early gives communities an opportunity to consider how potential projects could fit their local priorities.
Continuing the Conversation
Data Center 101 is just the beginning. The remaining sessions will explore additional topics related to data center development and provide opportunities to hear from industry professionals, workforce experts, and community leaders.
The goal is to give rural communities the information and connections they need to better understand data center development and make informed decisions about their future.
